Diversity in Decision Making
For a board to be effective, it must have directors with different expertise, perspectives, and opinions around the table, and embrace disagreement and debate to make thoughtful, informed decisions. But moderating the discussion to ensure everyone is heard and all points are understood can be challenging for even the most seasoned chairs.

How do you bring all those voices together into one?

In this white paper, originally published as part of WATSON’s Chair Suite, Dee Marcoux describes the model she uses to approach group decision making. Dee developed and honed this model during her career as an executive in the energy and mineral industries, and many years serving as a director and a Vice Chair. It empowers all board members to meaningfully contribute and enables the board to make decisions that reflect the diversity of perspectives in the room, then communicate those decisions with one clear voice.

This is a model which I developed over 30 years ago to help me make and implement decisions successfully. It is based on experience and has been refined over my many years in leadership roles and board positions. Although I have shared the model frequently in speeches, this is the first time I am sharing it in printed form. I hope you find it useful. – Dee Marcoux

With a thoughtful approach, tough decisions don’t need to be difficult to make. Learn how to improve your board’s decision making at the link below.

A Coach in Your Corner

As a new chair, you want to hit the ground running. But learning how to navigate and influence your board’s unique dynamics can take time, and even if you’re not new to the board itself, the transition to the chair role can be challenging for even the most experienced directors.

WATSON’s one-on-one chair coaching program is designed to help you elevate your personal contribution through leadership development and practical knowledge that can be put into action right away. In this multi-month program, you’ll:

  • Identify key areas for development
  • Work with your coach through at least two board meeting cycles
  • Access the guidance you need to address issues as they come up
  • Receive four hours of just-in-time confidential consultation when you need it most

With a WATSON coach in your corner, you won't feel alone at the head of the table.
