Pride Month at WATSON
WATSON is proud to celebrate and support 2SLGBTQ+ directors and leaders across Canada. It is central to our purpose that we advance into a society where every individual has an equal opportunity to thrive and contribute.

To celebrate Pride, members of the WATSON team from across the country gathered (some in person, some virtually) for our annual Pride Quiz. The time we spent together tested our knowledge – and our assumptions – about the 2SLGBTQ+ community; we discussed challenges the community faces, celebrated advances in equality, shared our experiences, and learned about how we can make positive contributions both personally and professionally. It was informative, enlightening, and a lot of fun.

One of the most powerful tools we have as we strive toward a more equitable society is knowledge. At WATSON, we value creating spaces of learning to address any potential gaps in our own knowledge, which in turn allows us to help our clients and partners be better leaders in an ever-evolving world.

Happy Pride from the WATSON team.

What's So Private About Director Compensation?
Private companies are a crucial part of the Canadian corporate landscape, and we’re seeing more and more of them improving their corporate governance with advisory and fiduciary boards. But while publicly traded companies are required to disclose their director compensation and corporate governance practices, the same is not true for their privately held counterparts.

We believe these companies deserve the same visibility into market practices as their publicly traded counterparts, which is why WATSON is excited to partner with Compensation Governance Partners (CGP) and Family Enterprise Canada on a Private Company Director Compensation Survey.

If you’re an owner, shareholder, senior leader, or fiduciary/advisory board member of a family-owned, closely held, or private Canadian company, we need just 20 minutes of your time to help us shed light on board and committee retainers and meeting fees, board composition and policies, DEI & ESG practices, and more.

We know you’re just as curious about this as we are, and all you have to do is take the survey for a free snapshot of the results. You’ll also receive invitations to CGP webinars which cover a variety of topics for both publicly traded and privately held companies.

All compensation data will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used for aggregate analysis. Individual organization data will not be disclosed.

The survey is open until July 29.

WATSON Speaks: The Regulatory Role in DEI
WATSON’s Leadership & Performance Practice Lead, Rachel O’Connor, recently sat on two panels at the Council on Licensure, Enforcement, and Regulation’s (CLEAR) 2022 Virtual Symposium to discuss The Regulatory Role in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Rachel and her fellow panelists – representatives from professional regulators at different stages of integrating DEI into their organizations and work – discussed regulators unique and crucial role in furthering DEI, along with challenges and opportunities inherent to the sector.

As regulators, you have many DEI touchpoints – your board and committees, the organization itself, registrants, and the public. This unique position provides regulators with an opportunity to address systemic issues, such as unequal access and outcomes for members of the public. Interested in making an impact? We think you’re up for the challenge.

We pulled together a few key takeaways for those of you in the regulatory world, and some practical steps for your board to take, no matter where you are on the DEI journey.

Are you interested in more education for your professional regulatory board? WATSON’s Governance Academy offers tailored courses in a range of board and organizational stewardship topics, including DEI, designed to address the challenges facing your board.

Our governance expert facilitators have experience advising regulatory boards across industries, and will get to know your unique context in order to provide the practical skills and knowledge your board needs.

WATSON Breakfast Forum: Exploring the G of ESG
ESG is a rapidly evolving area on everyone’s mind and every board’s agenda. But when was the last time you had the chance to really explore the governance aspect?

At WATSON, we are proud to work with governance professionals across industries and sectors who recognize the importance of ESG and are interested in leading the pack when it comes to oversight of this area.

And so, we’re gathering a group of those Board Administrators, Corporate Secretaries, and other governance professionals in a room to share their experiences, ideas, and lessons-learned with each other over breakfast.

If you’re a governance professional with insights to share, we want to hear about your board’s experience with the governance of ESG. How did you get started? What are the top pain points in connection with ESG work? What do you wish directors appreciated when it comes to ESG, and how do we help them get there?

We’ll layer in our own insights, based on WATSON’s work and experience in ESG governance. There is so much to explore in this area, and the more we work together, the further we can go.

We’ll be keeping the group small to foster an open flow of ideas, so don’t wait to register.
When: July 21, 2022 | 7:30-9:00am PST
